Placement 1: First Grade
Beginning several days before school started through the end of the 6th week of school I participated as a co-teacher in Katherine Blake's 1st grade class at Coleman Elementary. During that period of time I learned a lot about how to set up a classroom before the first day of school. I enjoyed learning team building during the first few weeks of classes, and felt embraced as part of the first grade community. Together, the students and I built a positive relationship wherein I was a role model and guide, yet they met me at whichever level was appropriate to them. We spent many hours working on learning to read and developing good habits surrounding literacy.
I am extremely grateful to Mrs. Blake for welcoming me into her classroom and allowing me to develop and grow as an educator.

This is a lesson that I developed in order to teach several English language learner students and struggling readers who were having difficulty with phoneme segmentation. It focuses on the /a/ sound as it was tied into the first Houghton Mifflin reading unit we taught in the first few weeks of school, which introduces short vowel sounds. We had a great time with this lesson and the students were very excited to pull out surprise items from a bag.
